SmiteFest1

The greatest game event ever held in a Seattle-area Episcopal church returns! On Saturday, October 17th Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Kenmore is proud (we will assume) to host SmiteFest 3: The Hallowing, an all-ages evening of videogames, movies, pizza and awesome.

All gamers everywhere are invited. Admission is free, but you’re welcome to make a donation to Child’s Play charity.

The featured game at SmiteFest is Rock Band 2. We’ll be running other games for the Xbox and Wii, as well as an area for laptop gaming. You’re welcome to bring your own favorites!

We will also be showing the documentary Nerdcore Rising, which follows nerdcore rapper MC Frontalot on his first national tour.

SmiteFest 2 recap

Once again, SmiteFest was AWESOME.

The day started early, when Eric and I went to the KOMO 1000 studios to appear on Charlie Harger’s radio show. We talked about SmiteFest, trends in gaming, trends in church, and how the nature of community is changing in the 21st century. At Charlie’s urging I also once again challenged the Lutherans to come to SmiteFest and show the Episcopalians how they roll.

We met again at noon in the undercroft. Eric and Stephanie came loaded with roughly a gazillion games:

SmiteFest 2

After setting up, we kicked off eight hours of gaming! About 20 people showed up (including a couple of Third Place Gamers) to play games such as Sarcophagus, Dominion, Cribbage, Blokus, El Grande, Risk, and many more.

You can find a full list of what we played (with commentary) at BoardGame Geek.

We had pizza from Pagliacci, fresh-baked cookies, and just generally had a blast. We can’t wait to do it again.

(By the way, if you run a gaming group and want to have an event in the undercroft at Redeemer, just contact out church office at office@redeemer-kenmore.org.)

SmiteFest in RPG Countdown, the Examiner

Is there no end to the talents of Mr. Ed Healy? First, he produces a excellent ad spot for us on his podcast RPG Countdown.

THEN he gives us a swell writeup at The Examiner.

The least we can do in return is direct you to his other excellent gaming podcast, Atomic Array. There, he and his co-conspirator Rone Barton interview some of the best game designers in the business, and hold forth on many and various topics of interest. (The latest episode features an interview with Wolfgang Baur, Kobold-in-chief of Kobold Quarterly and one of the chief inspirations for SmiteFest.)

This was a triumph

I’m making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.

We had between 40 to 50 people of all ages show up to eat and drink and play on two Xbox 360s, two Wiis, and three laptops running Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero, Call of Duty 4, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Wii Sports, StarCraft, and some 80s arcade games. We also raised $100 for Child’s Play.

Heads up: snow predicted for tonight

Snow’s been predicted for this afternoon in Seattle, raising the possibility of icy roads tonight.

Please check road conditions and travel alerts at the WSDOT website before setting out for SmiteFest. If they are at all difficult, we urge you to stay home.
